Type locality: Germany

Range: North Africa, to Central & South Europe, Asia Minor, Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Afghanistan, NW China, Tuva & Siberia

Habitat: Steppe and other xerophytic grassy associations between 500 - 2,500 mtrs

Flight Period: June to September

Subspecies:

ssp. armena Jachontov, 1911 - the Caucasus Major and Minor, the Armenian Highland;

ssp. briseis (Linnaeus 1764) - Germany to Central Europe, Hungary, Kazakhstan;

ssp. fergana (Staudinger, 1886) (= maracandica Staudinger, 1886) - Ghissar, S. Ghissar, Darvaz, Alai, the W. Pamirs;

ssp. hyrcana (Staudinger, 1886) - Kopet-Dagh;

ssp. larnacana (Oberthür, 1909) - Cyprus;

ssp. magna Heyne, [1894] - N. Tian-Shan, Dzhungarsky Alatau;

ssp. major (Oberthür, 1876) - North Africa;

ssp. meridionalis (Staudinger, 1886) - the S. European part, W. Siberia, Saur and Tarbagatai, the Altai, S. Siberia.

ssp. saga (Fruhstorfer, 1909) - Dalmations;

Form: A colour form with ochreous-red bands is known under the name of pirata Esper, 1777
