Hipparchia maderensis (Bethune-Baker, 1891)

Type locality: Madeira

Range: Aira de Serrado; Poiso; Pico Arieiro (Madeira).

Habitat: South facing, steep rocky slopes in sparse deciduous or coniferous woodland between 800-1,800mtrs.

Flight Period: Late July to mid-September

Notes: sometimes considered to be a subspecies of H. aristaeus but the pre-imaginal stages of H. maderensis differ widely from those of the semele-aristaeus complex. (see Linneana Belgica, Pars XIX, no. 5 Mars, 2004)
